I wasn’t planning on hitting the Wilbur in Boston last night for the first stop of ScHoolboy Q‘s OXYMORON World Tour, but my young mans Michael Christmas got the last minute call to open courtesy of Top Dawg himself, so I found myself in attendance after all.
This was like my fourth or fifth time seeing Q live, and unsurprisingly, his performance was outstanding as it always is. It hadn’t been a week since the release of OXYMORON (which is going to sit atop the weekly charts tomorrow morning), but the sold out 1200-capacity crowd knew the words to all the songs, new and old. One of the highlights was the Alchemist-produced “Break The Bank,” one of my favorite tracks off the album that absolutely rang off live. I captured the full performance of that one as well as shorter clips of “Man Of The Year” and the Habits N Contradictions classic “Blessed” (watch below).
I didn’t get any footage of Vince Staples or Isaiah Rashad, but each delivered strong sets and engaged the crowd well for being relatively new names. One of the highlights during Vince’s set was his preview of “Oh You Scared,” a new cut produced by Childish Major and featuring Jhene Aiko off his forthcoming Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2 mixtape. It’s a surprisingly eerie track – even for Vince – but definitely an entrancing one with beautifully haunting vocals from Jhene.
For those who’ve never seen Isaiah live (this was my second time), prepare to be pleasantly surprised by his energy and stage presence. His set was extremely cohesive from top to bottom, and he rocked the crowd with veteran level effortlessness. He performed a slew of joints off his recently released Cilvia Demo, but the song that engendered the strongest response was the phenomenal “Shot You Down,” which seems to be only growing more enjoyable with each passing day.
Christmas and Dutch ReBelle kicked things off correctly and proved Top Dawg right for choosing them as the local openers. Check out a short clip of Christmas performing the closing freestyle to “Overweight Drake” off Is This Art? below.
Enjoy the videos, and be sure to purchase OXYMORON if you’ve yet to do so.
