In the latest installment of the award-winning series, “GoldLink is the future,” the 20-year-old Virginia-bred upstart delivers an outstanding new cut called “One Step Back” backed by production from Denmark’s finest, Galimatias & Joppe.
The song, curated by the good folks at the ever forward-thinking Soulection premiered on The FADER earlier today, GoldLink’s first – but so far from last – appearance on the esteemed publication. Just a handful of songs into his young career, GoldLink has already proven his unrivaled ability to flex lyrically and sonically in all kinds of various ways, and the latest collaboration with the talented European beatmakers is more of the same. This one has a sentimental vibe, the upbeat yet soulful instrumental guiding GoldLink’s go-to bouncy flow and poignantly introspective bars.
The best part, though? This isn’t a rap song. It’s just music, and some of the best I’ve heard this year, at that. GoldLink has an uncanny ability to understand exactly what people want to hear, and in the case of “One Step Back,” it’s the blank space enhanced by the rhymes, not the other way around. It’s the type of music you want to get lost in – no matter how you’re feeling, this feels better. GoldLink accomplishes so much by doing just enough, and if that’s not the clearest sign of an artistic genius, I’m not sure what is.
