When was the last time you heard of a hip-hop emcee state their major influences in music are “Toro y Moi, Arctic Monkeys, My Chemical Romance, Bombay Bicycle Club, B.Dolla, MGMT, Green Day, Coldplay, Nirvana and most definitely Pink Floyd”? Goldlink might be the first in my book, but after spinning the seven (infectious) singles on his Soundcloud it is evident that Goldlink is more concerned with creating his own genre (aka “Futuristic Ass Bounce”), rather than bringing the Golden Era back.
The 20-year-old rapper from Virginia claims to have spent the last two years working day in and day out to create his own flow and develop his lyrical craft – a fact that is evident at first listen. He has the ability to blend sounds and genres together in combinations that are not traditional in the current rap landscape, with each one of his songs stimulating a different kind of emotion from listeners.
Since the release of “Electric Relaxation” in August, a Ta-Ku produced single, Goldlink’s name has received more eyes and his listen count has continued to rise on Soundcloud. Through all of this, he continues to maintain a mysterious essence – with only half an image of the emcee available on the internet, no music videos out, no full project available. It almost feels like the calm before the storm.
Stream Goldlink’s complete Soundcloud collection down below, and hit him with a follow on the Twitter. With 2014 rapidly creeping up on us, you can bet that Goldlink and his management are lining up their ducks for continued success in the next year.
Thanks to Plue, I’m steppin back in the cut for another few months
