I’ve had my eye on Toronto’s ShaqIsDope for a minute now. He’s got an impressive following, a strong team behind him, a sharp songmaking ability and some serious star power.
Yesterday, Shaq dropped the official video for “No Time,” one of the more popular joints off his recently-released Sophomore Season mixtape (download below). I’m a big fan of the track. Shaq takes full command over the incredible Mike Mulah beat, crafting a song that’s equally as hard as it is thought-provoking. True songmaking ability allows listeners to get lost in a record, and that’s exactly what Shaq does here.
If you’re an up-and-coming artist that’s taking your career seriously, you’ll definitely be able to relate to the hook on “No Time.” The rap game might seem like nothing but glamour and gold with a side of beautiful women from the outside looking in, but the reality is that life is one that is earned by putting in years of non-stop hard work and sacrifice.
As for the visuals, the 2Up crew went for a dark, minimal look, and in my eyes, it was the perfect decision. Bowen Mei was behind the direction of this one, as he has been in many of Shaq’s previous videos, and the product is as impressive as ever. Combining black and white lifestyle footage with high-quality performance shots, Mei created the ideal vibe to complement the record.
